Why Choose Bethel Hill Charter School ?

Educational Focus

The Bethel Hill Charter School educational focus is to provide an expanded learning environment by way of lowering teacher-pupil ratio while raising expectations in the academic areas of reading, writing, and math as outlined in North Carolina's Standard Course of Study. Strong emphasis will be placed on developing a love for learning and, equally important, respect for themselves and others in a multi-cultural, student-centered environment.

Improve Student Learning

Bethel Hill Charter School is committed to serving its children by placing them in classrooms with a much lower teacher/pupil ratio. We will focus on individualized instruction for each student as we are acutely aware that each child comes to us with a different learning style. Every child (at-risk, AG, or the average learner) will be placed at a level where the student is challenged but is also comfortable with his/her learning pace. The small class size will allow the teachers to incorporate various learning styles and innovative ideas to capture the attention of our diverse learners.

The special needs children will be served by the inclusion model.

Bethel Hill Charter School is dedicated to increasing academic performance for all children with an emphasis on allowing academically gifted children to move forward and to offer at-risk children the opportunity to work in groups that better meet the needs of these children. This can be accomplished by scheduling math and reading for all grades at the same time of the day. All children will be assigned to a homeroom teacher with a significantly lower teacher-pupil ratio, but they will not necessarily remain in that same class all day for instruction. During the time set aside as a school for reading and math, the children will be assigned to the group that best meets the needs of each individual student whether it be for remediation or acceleration. The classroom teachers will have the flexibility to move students when it best meets the needs of he students.

New Innovative Teaching Methods

Bethel Hill Charter School teachers will be committed to the ever changing needs of the children. They will strive to meet student needs by using learning styles research and curriculum designed to integrate those styles effectively in the classroom. We use Core Knowledge as a large part of our curriculum, integrated into the North Carolina Standard Course of Study.

Core Knowledge is based on the premise that we learn new knowledge by building on knowledge we already know. Students are offered a coherent sequence of specific knowledge that builds each year. This will provide teachers, parents, and the expected diversity of students continuity in each subject area each year. The Core Knowledge Sequence is a detailed outline of specific knowledge to be taught in Language Arts, Math, American and World History, Geography, Science, Visual Arts and Music.

Our school will also emphasize the importance of high moral standards and great respect for self and others. Students and faculty will be expected to display actions which exemplify these beliefs. A formal curriculum will be researched and adopted in this area.

We also have Duke Engineering Students who come to our campus on a weekly basis to help with Science Instruction with regards to Core Knowledge.

The principal will provide instructional leadership by keeping teachers abreast of current innovative concepts in education. The faculty will be given ample opportunities to attend conferences, workshops, and other career development choices.
